Virtual Private Network

A Virtual Private Network uses the Internet to connect to a private network. This connection allows the computer which is connecting to the private network, to be virtually connected to the network. In other words, the connecting computer will have access to the private network in the same ways as if it were physically connected to the network.

This could allow a person to connect to the office network from an ADSL connection at their home and therefore allow working from home. Alternatively, through the use of 3G, a person with a notebook could connect from anywhere where there is 3G coverage. This would allow brokers/sales reps/etc to connect to the office when out on the road.

Although the connection is taking place over the network the privacy of the data is ensured through the use of encryption. The encryption which is used is the equivalent of the encryption used by banks for their internet banking.
